- Cotton Balls
- Moisten a clean sponge and wipe your bisque to remove any dust or dirt.
- Put a color wash of SC-51 Poo Bear all over the front and back of your plate. Make a wash by dipping a cotton ball in water, squeezing excess water out. Dip it in SC-51 Poo Bear and then smear it in a swirling motion all over the plate. Try to achieve a variegated look - coverage that has light and dark patches. Let dry.
- Use a pencil to draw a bow or use carbon paper to trace the pattern on the bisque. Place the carbon paper beneath a pattern or photo, place the papers on the bisque and use a pencil to press down on the image to create the design. A red outline will be left on your bisque.
- Add handprints around the edge using SC-8 Just Froggy. If you are doing multiple children's handprints, you may want to use different shades of green. SC-26 Green Thumb is also a good shade to use. To get a good handprint, use a thick brush and paint your child's hand. Then, place it on the plate and press down with your hand over their hand before lifting up.
- Using CB-404 #4 Pointed Round, apply 2-3 coats of SC-74 Hot Tamale on the bow and make the holly berrys.
- Using CB-110 #10/0 Liner, outline the bow with SC-15 Tuxedo diluted with some water.
- Using a brush or writer tip with SC-15 Tuxedo to add your own personalized writing.

Optional Instruction: Talk to them a bit about the glazing and firing process and let them tour the kiln room. This is often times exciting for new little painters. For example, it is fun to tell them that the kiln gets as hot as about 18 really hot summer days all at once.
Operations Tips & Recommendations
- Have your workspace pre-set, have the children select a seat as they arrive.
- Spend some time talking to them by asking each one to share his/her name and tell if they have ever painted before. If they have, ask them what they have painted and where. This will give you a sense of what type of experience your class has and also help nervous or hyper painters relax a bit before beginning the activity.
- To help your customers get a good handprint, offer to help with the hand printing process. Have them use a thick brush and paint their child's hand. Then, help the child place their hand on the plate and press down with your hand over their hand before lifting up.
- Outlining with SC-15 Tuxedo - use of the detailer bottle and black glaze to outline design details on the bow -really makes this design element stand out. If you are running short on time, or if the child or parent doesn't feel comfortable that they can do a good job offer to have someone in your studio do the task. You can save this step until after the children leave. Just let the parents know that you'll be outlining each piece before it is fired.
