Instructions

  1. Using roughly 3 lbs of low fire clay, roll out a large slab.
  2. With the plastic card, compress the slab on both sides.
  3. Print pattern.
  4. Cut out the paper pattern pieces.
  5. Lay out pattern pieces to fit on the clay slab.
  6. Cut the pattern pieces out of the slab using a toothpick.
  7. Score marked edges as seen on the on the paper pattern for the body.
  8. Pinch and manipulate tail outwards and upwards.
  9. Scratch and attach and smooth out the connected seams.
  10. Scratch and attach fins.
  11. Cut blowhole with straw.
  12. Gently widen the hole with the end of a brush.
  13. Add decorations and details with the carving tool according to desired whale species.
  14. Using a fan brush, apply one coat of FN041 Medium Blue over textured area.
  15. Using a damp sponge, wipe back the medium blue from the raised areas, allowing the glaze to sit in the recessed areas.
  16. Using a fan brush, apply three coats of FN057 Periwinkle on the body of the whale.
  17. FN001 White for eyes, applied with back of brush.
  18. Apply a dot of FN009 Black to the eye with the tip of the toothpick.
  19. Using a fan brush, apply FN235 Celadon over textured area.
  20. Allow the whole piece to completely dry.
  21. Fire to cone 04.
