Project Info

  1. Roll out clay ¼" thick between wooden slats with a rolling pin. Wrap a large solo cup or a large size drink cup with paper towel or thin cotton fabric.
  2. Cut a circle shape ¾" larger then the bottom of the cup and double the thickness of the shape. This is the bottom of the stein.
  3. Cut a piece of clay to fit around the cup, about 4 ¼" high x 12 ½" long. Center the wrapped cup over the bottom shape then wrap with the cut piece of clay. Overlap the ends of the clay and cut with a Needle Tool. Remove the excess clay and slip/clay slurry together all parts.
  4. Add a coil to the base of the cup. Roll a fat coil for the handle. Cut small clovers to add to the handle and the mug.
  5. Roll a thinner piece of clay cut about 1" wide for the belt, and cut a square for a buckle. Add all pieces to the mug shape.
  6. After the clay firms up remove the plastic cup to prevent cracking.
  7. Allow to completely dry.
  8. Bisque Fire to shelf cone 04.

Painting Directions:

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Thin some FN-010 Tree Green and roll the inside of the stein. Leave upside down to drain. Wipe any drips or spills with a damp sponge.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of FN-010 Tree Green to the outside of the stein.
  4. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of SC-27 Sour Apple to the handle and the body of the stein. Take care to not paint in the detail, or too close to the edges.
  5. Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 2 coats of SC-26 Green Thumb to the clovers. Apply 2 coats of SC-15 Tuxedo to the belt and 2 coats of SC-42 Butter Me Up to the belt buckle.
  6. With the AC-213 Sponge on a stick, apply SC-15 Tuxedo to the ST-383 Chain link Stamp and stamp on the clovers. Allow to dry.
  7. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 05/06.
