Project Info


  1. Place the ¼" Wood Slats on the Canvas material. Roll out a slab of clay approximately in a 12"x12" square.
  2. Place the clay over the hump mold and using the slightly dampened BT-910 Sponge work the sponge over the clay to form and smooth the dish. Trim off the excess clay using the Fettling Knife along the edge of the mold, leaving the flanged edge.
  3. Roll out four equal sized balls of clay approximately ¼" diameter. Score the areas to attach the balls of clay forming the feet of the dish.
  4. Attach the balls of clay using slip/clay slurry and a brush. Let the piece set until firm. Remove the piece from the hump mold. Apply some slight pressure to flatten the feet of the dish but not warping the dish.
  5. Take a 1" ball of clay and press it into the CD-1149 Starfish Stamp, working off the excess clay to form a sprig to place on the lip of the dish. Score the area to be attached and using slip/clay slurry attach the starfish on the lower right corner.
  6. Roll out another piece of clay slightly larger than the inner area of the dish to approximately ⅛" thick. Using the CD-1149 Seaside design Press Tools - Fish, stamp in a school of fish running across the slab. Some fish may overlap, so press the stamp at an angle to accommodate the overlaps.
  7. Use a scoring tool to incise some vertical wavy lines forming seaweed running through the fish.
  8. Let the slab set until firm. Trim the slab to fit the inner area of the dish but to where it doesn't set completely in the bottom. Drill some various small drainage holes forming bubbles from the fish into the surface. These holes may be over the fish in some areas. Weight the slab under a board to keep it flat during drying. When the pieces are dry, clean for firing.
  9. Bisque fire the pieces to shelf cone 04 or to the recommended temperature for the clay.
  10. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SC-6 Sunkissed to the dish excluding the feet. During the third coat tip the edge of the brush with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown and paint the edge. This color is "wet" blended while painting the edge to darken. The color should be darkest along the edge of the dish.
  11. Using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round apply 1-2 coats of thinned SC-5 Tiger Tail to the starfish. Shade it with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown. Apply 2-3 coats of SC-76 Cara-bein Blue to the feet.
  12. To the insert, apply 2-3 coats of SC-6 Sunkissed to the fish using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round. Shade the areas of the fins with thinned SC-5 Tiger Tail and darken with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown.
  13. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, detail the markings with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown. The eyes and mouth are detailed with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown mixed with a bit of SC-76 Cara-bein Blue to darken. Apply 1-2 coats of SC-76 Cara-bein Blue to the seaweed. Allow to dry.
  14. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 1-2 coats of Clear Glaze to the entire dish. Apply 3 coats of EL-103 Sea Spray to the insert, excluding the fish with a brush sized for the area. To the stamped fish areas of the insert, apply 1 coat of S2101 - Crystal Clear Brushing.
  15. Clean out the holes in the insert prior to firing.
  16. Stilt and fire both pieces separately to shelf cone 06.
